The Toxicologist is responsible for the development, implementation and management of global scientific and regulatory strategies in support of the consumer product industry. This role leads toxicological safety assessments of active ingredients in food, personal care and household products, packaging materials, contaminants and manufacturing processes as well as monitors and analyzes regulatory developments and emerging chemical issues critical to GMA members. The Toxicologist acts as Subject-Matter-Expert in cross-functional project teams – with GMA staff, members and other external stakeholders – and as a technical resource for ingredient and chemical safety regulatory compliance issues. The role works with the GMA advocacy team to translate complicated scientific data into language meaningful to state and federal legislators. This position interfaces with domestic and international regulatory agencies on key issues important to GMA members.
Essential Job Function
•Provides technical assistance to individual GMA members and GMA staff regarding chemicals, ingredient approvals, and contaminants. This includes: researching regulations and conducting scientific literature reviews as needed to respond to members' questions; consulting with personnel in regulatory agencies as needed; compose oral and written responses and reporting results to individual members •Monitors, reviews and analyzes issues relating to chemicals and risk assessment in U.S. and international regulatory agencies and leads multiple technical committees •Participates in collaborative and cross-functional project teams as a technical resource for ingredient and chemical safety issues. •Participates in GMA activities in Codex and other international standards organizations as assigned. •Provides general administrative and technical assistance to the Vice President, Chemical and Ingredient Safety for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs projects regarding food additives, chemicals and contaminants. •Provides support for Government Affairs staff on issues related to ingredient and chemical safety regulatory policy as assigned.
Education and Skills
•Ph.D., or M.S. plus 4 years or B.S. plus 6 years of related work experience in toxicology, food science, chemistry, environmental health , or a related field •Excellent written and oral communication skills •Manages multiple projects, sets priorities, allocates time effectively, develops realistic goals and meets commitments •Effectively expresses complex technical information, ideas and research findings in both one-on-one and group interactions with both technical and non-technical audiences.
•Prior work experience must include experience in toxicology, public health, environmental science, biology, or chemistry •Experience must include assignments as a contributing member of or participant on cross-functional project teams and/or coalitions •Experience must include specific work assignments on Food policy, Chemical policy, regulatory process, FDA regulations, and/or EPA regulations •Two years experience in Personal Care and Household Products or Food Industry preferred
